DIAMOX ACETAZOLAMIDE 250MG TABLETS

Therapeutic indications

Acteazolamide is indicated in the treatment of:

Glaucoma: DIAMOX Tablets is useful in open angle glaucoma, secondary glaucoma, and perioperatively in acute angle closure glaucoma where delay of surgery is desired in order to lower intraocular pressure) because it acts on inflow, decreasing the amount of aqueous secretion.

Abnormal fluid retention: Acetazolamide is a diuretic whose effect is due to the effect on the reversible hydration of carbon dioxide and dehydration of carbonic acid reaction in the kidney. The result is renal loss of HC0^3- ion which carries out sodium, water and potassium. Acetazolamide tablets can be used in conjunction with other diuretics when effects on several segments of the nephron are desirable in the treatment of fluid retaining states.

Epilepsy: In conjunction with other anticonvulsants best results with Acetazolamide tablets have been seen in petit mal in children. Good results, however, have been seen in patients, both children and adults, with other types of seizures such as grand mal, mixed seizure patterns, myoclonic jerk patterns etc.

Altitude sickness. It decreases headache, tiredness, nausea, dizziness, and shortness of breath associated with a change in altitude. It is particularly useful in situations where a slow ascent cannot be made.

Posology and method of administration

Glaucoma: 250mg-1000mg in 24hours in divided doses for amounts over 250mg daily.

Abnormal fluid retention: As a result of congestive heart failure, drug-induced oedema.

Adult: For diuresis,the starting dose is 250mg-375mg once daily in the morning. If after an initial response,the patients fails to lose more edema fluid, do not increase the dose but give a break to the kidney by skipping a day.

Epilepsy:

Adult: ?250mg to 1000mg in daily divided doses.

Children: 8-30mg/kg in daily divided doses.

Altitude sickness:

500-1000mg per day in divided doses. Start 24-48 hours before ascent and continue for 48hours at high altitude or longer, to control the symptoms.
